Are You Ignoring Common Auto Maintenance Problems?

In today’s hectic world, you may not consider the thought of needing to take your vehicle in to be checked out at an auto service center. Even so, ignoring certain problems can lead to more serious problems down the road, and it could even leave you stranded by the side of the road. Learning to recognize indications of serious problems and knowing when you should take your vehicle in for a checkup by a qualified mechanic can ultimately help you to save time and money.

One of the first indications that there could be a serious problem with your brakes occurs when your vehicle does not stop as it should. When stopping distances seem to increase, it results in longer braking distances. This can be a very serious matter that could result in an accident if it is not attended to properly and promptly. Your vehicle should be brought in to determine whether the brakes may need to be replaced. There may also be a problem with the brakes if it seems as though your vehicle is moving to the right are the left when you apply the brakes. This could be due to the brakes grabbing, a problem that occurs when the brakes suddenly engage when steady pressure is applied to the brake pedal. This is not a problem that should be ignored and immediate brake repair should be done.

In other cases, serious problems can arise from the engine. An engine cutting out is a common problem that many people ignore until it is too late. When the engine cuts out, it is usually due to a complete loss of power, although only temporarily. If you have noticed that your vehicle’s engine is quitting regularly, especially under heavy acceleration, then engine repair should be performed right away. The problem could be related to the alternator or battery. Your mechanic will be able to determine the source of the problem and provide you with the best course of action.

If you have noticed sounds under the hood, especially a sound that is somewhat reminiscent of popcorn popping, this could be due to pings taking place during detonation. You might also notice that the problem appears to grow worse when you accelerate. If this is the case, you should not drive your vehicle until you have had it inspected by your local mechanic.

Have you noticed any odd smells emanating from your vehicle? If the problem isn’t due to your gym bag or yesterday’s drive-through lunch being left in the car, you may want to take it more seriously, especially if it is accompanied by smoke. This could be an indication that your car is burning oil. If it smells more like burnt toast and that wasn’t on the menu for breakfast, the problem could be attributed to an electrical short. Hot, metallic odors are often due to disorders related to coolant or antifreeze while rotten egg smells could indicate an emissions problem. Regardless, all of these are signs it is time for a checkup.
